JK Rowling has a lot of hatred for transgender people, especially male-to-female.
It’s almost like she hates anyone who won’t simply accept the status they were born with. As if, how dare they identify that something is different inside them? How dare they listen to that voice inside them, recognise their difference, and then find other people who can help them change into the person they really are? It’s almost like JKR thinks these people might learn some new skill or earn some new right or recognition that was never offered to her.
If we named a hospital “Hogwarts” and offered purely transgender surgery, do you think she would finally see the comparison?
For first timers, JKR refers to JK Rowling–writer and creator of Harry Potter and the massive franchise attached to it. The book series is about a 10-year-old boy who receives a letter from a school called Hogwarts, advising him he is actually a wizard, and not a regular human or ‘muggle’. That’s right. Someone tells him he is different to what he was told at birth. So he goes to a fancy institution (or ‘school’) to learn how to be his real self. Since writing this series, JKR has shown herself (through social media and otherwise) anti-trans, using her Harry Potter wealth to fund anti-transgender groups in the UK and abroad (as reported by the Advocate here).
I implore you: do not buy any more JKR or Harry Potter paraphernalia. I get it. I really do. It’s a fandom that gave so much to so many people. Offering a world where we could change into who we really are. However, while JKR created a fantasy world filled with hope and rebellion, behind the scenes, she funds and directly supports the work of Death Eaters: those who deny the rights and recognition of people who simply want to live their true lives.
JKR claims to be a feminist. However, she has never demonstrated alignment with feminist ideology. Feminism is about ensuring all women have the same fundamental rights as all men. None of what we are fighting for is extra or special. Most women don’t really care about having a door open for them; we just want it unlocked so we can walk through it ourselves, with the same access to the same room.
People like JKR are fighting against transgender rights because they think it’s about men transitioning to women to steal some ‘extra special’ rights that women in general don’t have. If you are a feminist and have been paying attention, you would see that feminists are still fighting for the basics, not anything extra special. And in knowing that, if you were a male willing to give up that life to take on the additional burden as a female because you know that’s who you really are… That’s an admirable decision to make. Anyone with the courage to do that deserves respect, not condemnation. There is no secret benefit; this is a decision that socially is a struggle, but the personal benefit is so much more. I’m glad you are here and made it through.
Now, that’s not to say that transgender males are not experiencing the same turmoil. On the contrary: they, too, should be admired for their courage. Any gender transition is rough. Today, I’m highlighting JKR because she is far more prominent, and we need stronger, more decisive action to remove her funding and presence from the equation. Transgender rights are human rights. All of us.
Personally, I don’t really care what gender you are. Everyone has their own story. And if you received your ‘letter’ that identified the real you, then congratulations! I’m looking forward to meeting you. I will stand up for you against the Death Eaters. I will fight for your right to be recognised for who you really are. And I will no longer give any support to JKR or the Harry Potter franchise.
